Karoulias broke into the first team of Apollon, playing on the left side of defence. In [[1980]], he was acquired by [[Panathinaikos FC|Panathinaikos]]. With the greens, he won the league title twice ([[1984]], [[1986]]) and the [[Greek Football Cup|Cup]] four times ([[1982]], [[1984]], [[1986]], [[1988]]). He ended his career in [[1988]], having appeared in 259 [[Alpha Ethniki]] matches with 10 goals to his credit.
During his career, Karoulias was capped 31 times by the [[National Football Team]] of [[Greece]], scoring one goal against Poland.
Afterwards, he coached a number of clubs including [[Panathinaikos FC|Panathinaikos]] ([[1997]]), [[Proodeftiki FC|Proodeftiki]], [[Kallithea FC]] ([[2000]] - [[2001]]), [[Anorthosis Famagusta FC|Anorthosis Famagusta]] and [[Apollon Athens FC|Apollon Athens]] ([[2010]] - [[2011]]).
