Laiko
,no edit summary
Laiko was the pop music of the 1950s and 1960s. It developed from the Rebetiko style of music, more refined, more westernised and more respectable. Vasilis Tsitsanis, Manolis Chiotis and others are responsible for this transformation / evolution. Laiko-style songs ("laika") sing about romantic love, love for a mother, immigration and the lament of separation, nostalgia, poverty and political-societal injustices. Though immensely popular in Greece, it laiko was criticized from some quarters for its apoliticism and decadence, and its unpure Turkish roots.
