Agios Athanasios has a population of approximately 13,000 inhabitants. Its name is derived from its patron saint, [[Saint Athanasius]].

Originally and until the mid-[[20th century]], it was a village whose inhabitants worked at different aspects of farming or mining or wood cutting. Its population more than doubled after the [[1974]] [[invasion of Cyprus by Turkey]] when 200,000 Greek Cypriots fled their homes in the north, as may refugees settled here.

In May [[1986]], Agios Athanasios was proclaimed a municipality.
