New page

An Iconodule (Greek eikono-doulos "A slave to images") is someone who supports or is in favor of religious images, or icons, also known as Iconography, and is in opposition to an Iconoclast (someone against Iconography). The term was coined by iconoclasts - as was "iconolatres" (worshippers of icons). Those that supported icons in Byzantine times preferred the term "Iconophiles".

The term is usually used in relation to the Iconoclasm controversy in Byzantine times; the most famous Iconodules of that time being Theodore the Studite and John of Damascus.
