'''Markos Vafiadis''' ([[Theodosiopolis]], [[Asia Minor]], 1906 - [[Athens]], [[Greece]], [[February 23]], [[1992]]) was a leading cadre of the [[Communist Party of Greece]] (KKE) during the [[Greek Civil War]].

==Pre-war life==
After the [[Asia Minor Disaster]] of 1922, Vafiadis went to [[Thessaloniki]] and [[Kavala]] as a refugee. Subsequently he worked in the party's underground organisation in [[Crete]] and was one of the leaders of the [[Chania]] uprising against the dictatorial regime ([[July 28]], [[1938]]). After the supression of the uprising, he went to [[Athens]] where he was arrested. He was jailed in [[Nafplio|Akronafplia]] and exiled to the island of [[Gavdos]].

In May 1941, during the German invasion in [[Greece]], he escaped from [[Gavdos]] and began underground work against the German occupation, initially in [[Crete]], later in [[Athens]] and [[Thessaloniki]]. After the party split in 1968, [[KKE Interior]] restored him.
