The population of the village, according to the [[2001]] census was 143 inhabitants.<br /> <br /> Melas was named after [[Pavlos Melas]] the Marseille-born Greek officer who was killed by the Turks in the village - then named &#039;&#039;&#039;Statista&#039;&#039;&#039; - on [[October 13]], [[1904]], during the [[Macedonian Struggle]].
