- 1978: A powerful earthquake (6.5 on Richter scale) strikes Thessaloniki; 35 people are dead in collapse of building at Nicephorus Phocas Street.

- 2012: New Democracy leader, Antonis Samaras, is sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece heading a coalition made up of New Democracy, PASOK and the Democratic Left.

- 2004: Greece qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2004 despite losing 2-1 to Russia.
- 2007: Panathinaikos defeat rivals Olympiakos 89-76 to win their fifth straight Greek league basketball title, completing the season as triple crown winners -- championship, cup and European Championship.
