  • January 22: A decision to establish an agrarian bank to aid the farmers is made by the Greek government.
  • January 23: The Greek Government publishes the law that adopts the Gregorian Calendar.
  • January 30: Greece and Turkey sign the agreement to exchange populations. The Greeks of Constantinople and the Turks and other Muslims of Western Thrace are excluded from this mandatory exchange.

  • August 1: A powerful earthquake (6.6 on the Richter scale) strikes Crete.
  • August 30: Italian forces bombard and occupy Corfu in retaliation for the death of kidnapped Italian General Enrico Tellini by bandits. 20 Greeks die in the bombardment.

  • September 20: Patriarch Meletius IV resigns the Ecumenical throne amid growing political pressure.
  • September 27: The Italian forces that had occupied Corfu evacuate the island. Greece is forced to pay an indemnity to the Italian government.
