  • April 20: Stelios Kyriakidis wins the Boston Marathon with a record-breaking time of 2hr 29m 27s. His record will stand until the late 1960s. After finishing the race, Kyriakidis comments to the US media: "Please, don't forget my country!"

  • June 17: The Greek Parliament controversially votes into law the Emergency Measures Act which allows the death penalty for those that "work against public order and the territorial integrity of the state"

  • July 1: The first eleven special military courts are set up in Greece following the Emergency Measures Act of June 17.
