February
- February 12: The second general council of the Communist Party of Greece takes place which decides to boycott the upcoming elections in favour of armed struggle.
March
- March 31: The first post-WW II elections are held in Greece. Stylianos Gonatas' Laiko Komma emerges victorious. The elections were boycotted by the Communist Party of Greece.
April
- April 20: Stelios Kyriakidis wins the Boston Marathon with a record-breaking time of 2hr 29m 27s. His record will stand until the late 1960s. After finishing the race, Kyriakidis comments to the US media: "Please, don't forget my country!"
June
- June 17: The Greek Parliament controversially votes into law the Emergency Measures Act which allows the death penalty for those that "work against public order and the territorial integrity of the state"
- June 27: The foreign ministers of the Great Powers decide in Paris to award the Dodecanese to Greece.
July
- July 1: The first eleven special military courts are set up in Greece following the Emergency Measures Act of June 17.
September
- September 1: A referendum is held on the return of King George II. According to the official results, 68.3% of the electorate approve his return.
- September 28: King George II is formally recalled to the throne after a very controversial referendum.
December
- December 22: Exiled Metropolitan Makarios of Kyrenia - the future Archbishop Makarios II of Cyprus - returns to Cyprus to a tumulteous welcome.
