- June 2: Panathinaikos play Ajax Amsterdam in the 1971 European Cup Final. Ajax win 2-0.
- June 13: Panagiotis Nacopoulos smashes Giorgos Papavassiliou's 11 year-old record in 3000m steeple (8:45.8) with 8:40.8
- June 18: Junta strongman George Papadopoulos threatens Cyprus President Archbishop Makarios III with "bitter measures" should he insist on refusing Papadopoulos' proposals relating to the Turkish Cypriot minority.

- October 26: Mitsos Partsalidis, Babis Drakopoulos and 30 other members of the KKE-Interior are arrested.

- December 11: It is announced that broadcast television will cover as of 1972 the entire Greek periphery.
- December 15: Panathinaikos, representing Europe, draw 1-1 against Nacional of Montevideo in the first leg of the Intercontinental Cup. The lone green goal was scored by Totis Fylakouris. Yiannis Tomaras is seriously injured with a broken leg.
