The 1971 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over two legs in December 1971 between the runners up of the 1971 European Cup Final, Panathinaikos (European Cup winners Ajax declined to participate), and Club Nacional de Football, winners of the Copa Libertadores.
First leg
The first game played on 15 December 1971 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens. Panathinaikos and Nacional were draw 1-1. The attendance was approximately 60,000 spectators .Favilli Neto from Brazil was the referee. Totis Fylakouris scored the first goal on 48th minute for Panathinaikos and Luis Artime on 50 for Nacional.
