The 1971 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over two legs in December 1971 between the runners up of the 1971 European Cup Final, Panathinaikos (European Cup winners Ajax declined to participate), and Club Nacional de Football, winners of the Copa Libertadores.

First leg

The first game played on 15 December 1971 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. Panathinaikos and Nacional drew 1-1. The attendance was approximately 60,000 spectators. Favilli Neto from Brazil was the referee. Totis Fylakouris scored the first goal on 48th minute for Panathinaikos and Luis Artime on 50 for Nacional.

Panathinaikos: Economopoulos, Tomaras, Kapsis, Sourpis, Athanassopoulos, Eleftherakis, Filakouris, Dimitriou, Antoniadis, Domazos, Kouvas, (sub. Vlahos). Coach: Ferenc Puskas

Nacional: Manga, Brunell, Ubiña, Montero Castillo, Blanco, Cubilla, Espárrago, Maneiro, Artime, Morales, (sub Duarte). Coach: Washington Etchamendi

Second leg

The second game played on 28 December 1971 at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo and the attendance was 63,000 spectators. Nacional beat Panathinaikos 2-1 the goals came from Luis Artime (34 and 74) for Nacional, and Antoniadis (89) for Panathinaikos.

Nacional: Manga, Masnik, Brunell, Ubiña, Montero Castillo, Blanco, Cubilla, Maneiro, Espárrago, Artime, Mamelli, (sub. Mugica, Bareño). Coach: Washington Etchamendi.

Panathinaikos: Ikonomopoulos, Mitropoulos, Kapsis, Sourpis, Athanassopoulos, Kamaras, Eleftherakis, Dimitriou, Antoniadis, Domazos, Kouvas, (sub. Filakouris). Coach: Ferenc Puskas
