• January 27: An Athens Appellate Court acquits Police Officer Athanasios Melistas in the 1985 shooting of 15-year old student Kaltezas.

February

• February 3: Two bazookas are stolen from the Greek War Museum.
• February 5: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November sends a proclamation to the "Epikairotita" newspaper, assuming responsibility for stealing two bazookas from the Greek War Museum.
• February 27: Despite opposition from the Church, divorce laws are reformed and the civil wedding ceremony is introduced in Cyprus.

• April 8: New Democracy win the 3rd parliamentary elections held within a year with 46.8% of the vote and 150 seats.

May

• May 4: Constantine Karamanlis is elected President of Greece.
• May 21: Greece recognises the state of Israel.
• May 30: A liver transplant is performed for the first time in Greece.

• June 2: AEK defeat Olympiakos 3-2 to win the first Greek League Cup.
• June 29: Maria Christoforidou wins 3 gold medals at the European Weightlifting Championships in Tenerife.

• July 4: Cyprus applies for membership in the European Union.
• July 8: Greece and the US sign a new agreement concerning military bases on Greek soil.

• September 9: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins his first Grand Slam title after defeating Andre Agassi at the US Open.

October

• October 14: Antonis Tritsis defeats actress-activist Melina Mercouri and is elected Mayor of Athens. Tritsis received 50.15% of the vote against Mercouri's 45.94%.

November

• November 20: Businessman Vardis Vardinoyiannis escapes a rocket attack on his car by the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.

December

• December 11: The "Hour of the Prime Minister" is established in Parliament. Constantine Mitsotakis answers to Charilaos Florakis on the subject of German World War II reparations
