- January 13: The Nika riots break out in Constantinople. The two dominant chariot-racing factions, the Greens and the Blues, stir up the mob to riot against emperor Justinian I. The rioting and destruction continues throughout the week. Finally, Justinian decides to strike ruthlessly and the revolt ends with a bloodbath in the Hippodrome (30.000 dead approximately)
- January 18: The Nika riots are put down by General Belisarius. 30,000 rioters are slain in Constantinople.
