APOEL ( Athlitikos Podosferikos Omilos Ellinon Lefkosias - Greek: Αθλητικός Ποδοσφαιρικός Όμιλος Ελλήνων Λευκωσίας - Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Lefkosia) is a Cypriot football club founded on November 8, 1926 in a Lefkosia patisserie by a group of 40 sports-minded Cypriots.

The club was among the founding members of the Cyprus Football Association and has participated in the First Division of the Cyprus league since its inception with the exception of 1974 when it participated in the Greek Football A Division. That year, APOEL became the only Cypriot team not to be relegated however, due to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, they were unable to compete again, returning to the Cypriot League.

Europe

APOEL were the first Greek (Cypriot or mainland) football club to advance in a European competition as they eliminated Lin of Norway in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963 (6-0, 1-0).

In 2009, APOEL advanced to the Group Stages of the Champions' League for the first time in their history.
