Anthimus was born into a wealthy family. He succeeded [[Gregory IV of Constantinople|Gregory IV]] after the latter was exiled to [[Rhodes]] by the Holy Synod.

Anthimus left the Patriarchate after three months and withdrew to a monastery after the exiled former Patriarch, [[Cyril Lucaris]], returned to the throne of [[Saint Andrew]].

Anthimus died in [[1628]].
