Democratic Union of Cyprus

The Democratic Union of Cyprus (Δημοκρατική Ένωσις Κύπρου) was a political party in Cyprus founded on November 17 of 1959, by Ioannis Clerides and Themistocles Dervis. It arose as a right-wing alternative to Archbishop Makarios III in the 1959 presidential elections, during which it also attracted support from the leftist AKEL.

In the presidential election of December 13, 1959, Democratic Union fielded Ioannis Clerides as its candidate but he only polled one third of the vote.

In 1960, the alliance with AKEL ended and the Democratic Union of Cyprus did not take part in the legislative elections of that year. It dissolved soon therafter.
