Born on July 29, 1961, Dimitris Saravakos started his football career at Panionios on December 26, 1977 in a game against Aegaleo FC. His father, Thanasis, had also played with distinction for Panionios during the 1950s and 1960s.

After 142 games (35 goals) he was traded to Panathinaikos in 1984. He quickly won the fans over with his speed and fine technique.

For a decade he was the indisputable leader of Panathinaikos (239 games, 124 goals). In July 1994 he was traded to AEK Athens. Three years later he rejoined Panathinaikos to close his career (442 games, 184 goals).

He earned his first Greece cap on December 1, 1982 (Greece- Switzerland 1-3). On October 10, 1991 he scored 5 goals against Egypt (6-1). He was capped 78 times, scoring 22 goals, for the National Football Team of Greece and was a member of the Greek squad that played in the 1994 World Cup. His last match was against Argentina (0-4) for the US World Cup in 1994.
