Elassona

Elassona is a town in the Larisa prefecture in Thessaly, Greece.

Elassona is the capital of Elassona province, built at an altitude of 300m, at the south foot of Mount Olympus, the mythic place of the twelve Olympian gods. It is situated 63.5km from the city of Larisa.

The town was among the first ones liberated in the First Balkan War, on October 6, 1912.

Population

The population of the town is 7.762 while that of the entire municipality is 14,563 according to the 2001 Census.

Places to see

  • The Monastery of Panagia the Olympian, built during the reign of Byzantine emperor Andronicus II
  • The old Mosque, converted into a museum with artifacts from the Ancient, Roman and Byzantine eras.
