Fani Halkia

Fani Halkia (Greek: Φανή Χαλκιά; born 2 February 1979 in Larisa, Greece) is a Greek athlete. She won gold in the women's 400m hurdles at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The victory was all the more memorable for Fani as it came in front of her home fans. In the semi-final on the 22nd August Halkia had set a new Olympic record of 52.77, eclipsing the previous best of 52.82 set by Jamaica's Deon Hemmings at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Heavily favoured to win another medal in the Olympics of Beijing, Halkia was sent home on August 17, 2008, after she tested positive for M3 - a banned steroid.

On November 21, 2008, Halkia was suspended for two years by the Greek athletics federation SEGAS.

Fani Halkia was a former high jumper, and had studied to become a TV journalist in 2000/2001 when injured.
