Gabriel Schurrer

Gabriel Schurrer (Born August 16, 1971 in Santa Fé) is a retired Argentinian international football player. He was a tough man-marker who was happiest working the left side of central defence. With an eye for the long ball through to the forwards, and a powerful shot, he was not without attacking qualities either.

He played for his country at various youth levels before gaining senior honours. His international highlight came when he represented Argentina at the 1995 Copa América.

Schürrer enjoyed his footballing education at his local club, Atlético de Rafaela, before moving to the capital and Club Atlético Lanús. Had six successful seasons with the Buenos Aires outfit, earning an international call-up.

He joined Racing de Santander in 1996 where his performances over two campaigns brought him to the attention of other La Liga clubs. Eventually signed for Deportivo La Coruña in 1998, but while Schürrer helped the club win a maiden league title two years later, he was never a first choice at the Riazor.

In 2000 a €2.7m fee took him to UD Las Palmas where he produced career-best form after being given greater responsibility and, on occasions, a sweeper's role.

He switched to Real Sociedad in 2002 on a free transfer after UD Las Palmas were relegated. Made 24 appearances in 2002/03 and then enjoyed another fruitful campaign before opting to leave in the summer, signing a one-year contract with the option of a second term at Olympiakos Piraeus.

2004/05: His presence in the centre of Olympiakos' defence was commanding in the early part of the season, and his experience and class also brought out the best in partner Giorgos Anatolakis. Schürrer scored the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League win against AS Monaco, but after their exit in the group stage his form declined and he lost his place in the starting lineup as his club completed the domestic double.

In 2006 he returned to Spain, signing with Málaga CF. He retired the following year.
