The term Green Line is used to refer to the line of demarcation that divides the Cypriot capital of Nicosia into the southern Greek Cypriot region and the northern Turkish Cypriot region.

The Green Line was first created following the December 1963 troubles, agreed upon by the two communities on December 30, 1963. At that time, Turkish Cypriots started moving into well-defined enclaves, separating themselves from the Greek Cypriots. Prior to this, the two communities had lived side-by-side.

After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974, the Green Line became the border line between the areas of Lefkosia still controlled by the government of Cyprus and the Turkish occupied half (later the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus").
