Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa (Greek: Ηγουμενίτσα - Igoumenítsa) is a city in north-western Greece, across from the island of Corfu. It is the capital of the prefecture of Thesprotia and the province of Thyamida and the main seaport of Epirus.

It became capital of Thesprotia in 1936 when it was still a village. In 1944, during the second World War, Igoumenitsa was destroyed by the Germans but was rebuilt after the war.

The city has a population of 9,104 inhabitants according to the 2001 census. The greater municipal area numbers 14,710 souls.
