John VII Grammaticus was Patriarch of Constantinople from 836 till 842.

John VII was one of the most learned men in the Byzantine empire in his day. He tutored emperor Theophilus and was appointed by the latter to the throne of St Andrew in 836. He was an iconomach who, as Abbot of the Monastery of Sergius and Bacchus, had ordered all icons in the monastery destroyed. As patriarch, he continued those policies.

After the death of emperor Theophilus, John was removed by the empress Theodora.

After John VII died, his remains were burnt by order of emperor Michael III.
