1821: Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus is hanged by the Turks in an attempt to intimidate the Cypriots from joining the Greek Revolution. The bishops of Paphos, Kition and Kyrenia and 470 other important Cypriots are also executed.
1824: During the Greek War of Independence, Chrysanthus becomes Ecumenical Patriarch.
1832: The Treaty of London is signed.
1863: Reform-minded clergymen and laics have Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim II removed from office.
1906: Metropolitan Photius of Korytsa is murdered during the Macedonian Struggle.
