- 1821: Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus is hanged by the Turks in an attempt to intimidate the Cypriots from joining the Greek Revolution. The bishops of Paphos, Kition and Kyrenia and 470 other important Cypriots are also executed.
- 1824: During the Greek War of Independence, Chrysanthus becomes Ecumenical Patriarch.
- 1863: Reform-minded clergymen and laics have Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim II removed from office.
- 1920: The Greeks take Bursa during the first Greek offensive of the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922)
- 1956: A powerful earthquake (7.3 on the Richter scale) strikes Santorini resulting in 53 deaths and more than 100 injuries.

- 1999: Nikos Kaklamanakis wins the silver medal at the World Mistral Championship in Belgium.
- 2000: Alexandros Papadimitriou become the first Greek hammer-thrower to break the 80m barrier (80.45m).
- 2000: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins Wimbledon and sets a new record with 13 Grand Slam titles.
