Kyrenia province takes up the northern part of Cyprus, facing Turkey, excluding the Karpasia peninsula. It was colonised early by Achaeans from mainland Greece who named the province's capital city Kyrenia after ancient Kyrenia in Achaea. The province is one of the most beautiful on the island with the Pentadaktylo mountains to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. Noteworthy sights are St. Hilarion castle, the castle of Kerynia and Bellapais Abbey.

Kerynia province has been entirely under Turkish military occupation since 1974.
