Leon Karapanagiotis was born in Athens in 1931. He studied Political Science in France and Switzerland and had been working for the Lambrakis Press Group since 1953. He was the manager of the Greek newspaper Ta Nea for many years, after being appointed in 1982, while he served as the paper’s editor to date. He also held the post of vice-president of the Group’s Steering Committee.

In 2002, Kostis Stefanopoulos, President of the Hellenic Republic, awarded Leon Karapanagiotis a medal for his continuous contribution to the promotion of serious news. He was married to Eleni Valaoritou and had two daughters.

His health took a turn for the worse in 2005, when he suffered a series of strokes. Leon Karapanagiotis died Saturday, January 7, 2006.
