Makrynitsaor Makrinitsa (Greek: Μακρυνίτσα) is the balcony of Mt.Pelion which is its nickname, 17 km NE of Volos, Magnesia, Greece. One of the most characteristic traditional settlements, full of mansions and houses that look like hanging ornaments on the green mountain side and are colorful but not as Portaria. It sits of a slope of the Pelion range and another mountaintop to the east with forests. The square with the age - old plane trees lends a panoramic view of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. In one of the traditional coffee houses there is a big fresco by Theofilos. The picturesque cobbled paths of Makrinitsa are scattered with traditional water fountains.
Makrynitsa has a school, a lyceum, a church, a post office and a square (plateia) with few tall trees.
History
Makrinitsa played a crucial role in the rebellion of Thessaly Greeks against Turkish rule in 1878. Battles were fought here between rebels - including volunteers from Athens University under Prof. N. Nikolaidis - and Turkish forces, before the latter, on March 16, 1878, managed to enter Makrinitsa and destroy a large part of the town.
