Events

  • 1821: Three days after the proclamation of the Greek Revolution, a provisional government is formed in the liberated city of Kalamata.
  • 1921: During the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), battles break out along the Afyon Karahisar - Eskisehir line.
  • 1930: The Turkish government announces that henceforth Constantinople shall be called Istanbul. Angora is officially named Ankara.
  • 1957: EOKA fighter, Stylianos Lenas, who was wounded in a firfight with British soldiers on February 17, succumbs to his wounds. He is buried without a funeral at the Imprisoned Tombs in the Central Jail of Nicosia.
  • 1964: The Turkish government starts expelling ethnic Greeks. During the 1964, almost 10,000 Greeks will be forced out of Turkey.
  • 1964: Saudi King Ibn Saud is ousted by his brother Faisal. He will take refuge in Greece where he will spend the rest of his life.
  • 1972: Dictator George Papadopoulos becomes: Royal Regent, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister and President of the Greek Parliament.
  • 1994: EU representative Van der Brook asks Greek PM Andreas Papandreou to lift all the measures his government has taken against FYROM.
  • 2003: Greek police put an end to the hijacking of a Turkish jet which landed at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. All 192 passengers and 11 crew members are safe.
