Morphou

Morphou is a city in Lefkosia province, NW Cyprus. It is situated 34 kilometres West of the capital, Lefkosia.

Morphou was founded by Spartans who brought with them the worship of Aphrodite. In the Middle Ages, the city was referred to as Morphou but also Theomorphou. The Morphou area grew more than half of Cyprus citrus fruits.

Morphou has been under Turkish military occupation since August 16, 1974. Prior to that, its population was 9,000 inhabitants, 97% of which were Greek.
