Poly Panou

Poly Panou was a popular Greek laika singer.

Panou was born Polytimi Koliopanou on October 28, 1940 in Patra. She started singing at an early age and was discovered by Grigoris Bithikotsis. In the late 1950s she worked with famous Laika composers Vasilis Tsitsanis and Yiannis Papaioannou. By 1966, she owned her own recording company.

Among her great hits of that period were:

• «Παιδιά του Πειραιά» (The lads of Piraeus) which was made famous in the film Never on a Sunday,
• «Μες στην πολλή σκοτούρα μου» (In the midst of all my worries),
• «Φέρτε μια κούπα με κρασί» (Bring me a bowl of wine),
• «Σβήσε το φως να κοιμηθούμε» (Turn out the light so we can sleep),
• «Πάρε το δαχτυλίδι μου» (Take my ring),
• «Καυγαδάκι» (The spat),
• «'Αλλα μου λεν τα μάτια σου» (Your eyes tell me one thing),
• «Εσένα δε σου άξιζε αγάπη» (You didn't deserve to be loved),
• «Τα αδέλφια δε χωρίζουνε» (Siblings don't quarrel),
• «'Ασε πρώτα να ξεχάσω» (Let me first forget), etc.

Poly Panou died on September 27, 2013.
