- 1570: Nicosia falls to the Turks in an orgy of slaughter. Roughly 20,000 of its inhabitants were put to the sword.
- 1667: Clement becomes Patriarch of Constantinople.

- 1941: The resistance movement EDES is founded in Athens by venizelist Col. Napoleon Zervas.

- 1993: The government of Constantine Mitsotakis collapses after the defection of four MPs.
- 1996: The government of Cyprus publishes evidence that Solomos Solomou was shot dead by Kenan Akin, "minister of agriculture" of the so-called Turkish Republic of N. Cyprus.
- 2005: Vladimir Putin becomes the first Russian state leader to visit Mount Athos.

- 1961: AEK kick off the 1961-1962 season with an 8-0 away win at Aegaleo. Kostas Nestoridis scores three goals, Andreas Stamatiadis and Thanasis Gouvas two each, with Giorgos Petridis contributing one.
- 1982: Anna Verouli wins gold at the European Games of Athens with a javelin throw of 70.02m
- 1990: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins his first Grand Slam title after defeating Andre Agassi at the US Open.
