Stefanos P. Tamvakis

Stefanos P. Tamvakis was born on the 27th of June 1952 in Alexandria, Egypt. He studied at Averofion school of Alexandria and later, at Cambridge, UK, Business Administration.

He speaks fluently Greek, French, English and Arabic.

In 1976 he returned to Egypt and took over the family business, in food manufacturing, St’ George’s, est. 1905, along with his cousin Stefanos Th. Tamvakis.

His community activities began in 1976, at his election, as a member of the philanthropic society Aeschylus – Arion, following the steps of his father, Paul Tamvakis, who once served President of the society.

In 1984 he was elected board member of the Greek Community of Alexandria (EKA). His first concern was the reform and development of the Community’s Old People’s Home “Kaniskeri-Andoniadi”.

In 1990 he was elected President of the Greek Community at the age of 38.

In 1995 he was elected Vice-President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), and was unanimously re-elected 3 times.

On December 9, 2006 he was elected as the President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad. In the second round of the elections for a new SAE president, held in Thessaloniki, he garnered 238 votes (55.74%), against 189 votes (44.26%) for Christos Tomaras, from Chicago. Olga Sarantopoulou, from Vienna, was elected Secretary and Costas Dimitriou, from Cologne, Treasurer.
