Thomas Mavros

Born on May 31, 1954, Thomas Mavros was, without a doubt, one of the best offensive players that Greece has seen in the last 30 years. He could easily have made a career in France, Spain, etc.

Thomas Mavros was the classic striker that could move quickly in the opposing area, take very strong shots, was smart with the ball and could bring chaos to defenders. He holds the record in the Greek championship with 260 goals in 501 games.

He became top scorer four years: in 1978 with 22 goals, in 1979 with 31 goals (third in Europe), in 1985 with 27 goals, and in 1990 with 22 goals.

Thomas Mavros started his football career in 1970 with the club of Panionios and he transferred to AEK in 1976. There, he won two championships (1978 and 1979) one cup (1978) and later he returned to Panionios in 1988 where he finished his career in 1991.

Mavros was capped 36 times with the National team of Greece (11 goals) between 1972-1982. When he debuted against Holland on February 16, 1972, he set a record as the youngest Greek international (17 years, 261 days old) which stood until November 2011.
