Tinos (Greek: Τήνος) is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, part of Greece. It is located in the Cyclades island complex. In ancient times, Tinos was also known as Ophiussa and Hydroessa. The closest islands are Andros and Mykonos. The area is about 194 km² and has about 8,000 people.
Between 1207 and 1715, Tinos was in Venetian hands. From 1715 to 1821, Tinos was ruled by the Ottoman Empire before joining with Greece.
Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for: the monastery of Panagia Evangelistria, its 20 windmills, the 1000 pigeon-houses, the 50 villages waiting to be explored, for the co-existence of Greek-Orthodox and Catholics, the Venetian fortifications, and for its famous sculptors and painters like Nikolaos Gyzis, Giannoulis Chalepas and Kostas Tsokles.
Because of it is located near the geographical center of the Cyclades island complex, and because of the Panagia Evangelistria monastery with its reputedly miraculous icon of Virgin Mary that it holds, Tinos is also the center of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place at the date of the ascension of Virgin Mary (15 August, known in Greek as "Dekapentavgoustos" = 15th of August). This is perhaps the most notable and still active yearly pilgrimage in the region of the eastern Mediterranean.
The mining on the island includes marbles, Verde antico, asbestos and granite mine near Volakas

Transportation
Tinos has a small port which ferries cars and serves to other ports including Mykonos (40 min), Piraeus, Rafina, Andros and Syros.
