He played outside-left (left wing) for [[Doxa Drama FC|Doxa Drama]] in their glory years ([[1950s]] - early [[1960s]]).
Despite his fine play, unlike his teammates [[Takis Loukanidis]], [[Thanasis Loukanidis]] and [[Pavlos Grigoriadis]], Ioannou did not receive an offer from one of the bigger clubs in the [[Football A Division|Alpha Ethniki]]. He was, however, capped by the [[National Football Team]] of Greece once in [[1959]].
