Yiannis Gounaris was PAOK's right wing defender from 1971 until 1982. Born in 1952, he started his football career with Makedonikos Neapolis FC, a fourth division Thessaloniki local football team.
In 1983, Gounaris joined PAOK's rivals Olympiakos and played for them until the 1985 season.
In his career, Gounaris appeared in a total of 426 top league games. He was capped 27 times by the National Football Team of Greece.
After his playing career was over, Gounaris took to coaching. His most memorable assignment was taking Olympiakos to within a game of the 1989 championship. He quit after losing the penultimate game of that season to AEK, a loss he might have contributed to by taunting AEK's players as "unmanly" prior to the match.
