Yiannis Papaspyrou

Yiannis Papaspyrou was a Greek economist and politician who also served as Mayor of Piraeus.

Papaspyrou was born in Piraeus in October of 1922. He was elected to the Piraeus City Council in 1959. In 1964, he elected to the Hellenic Parliament, under the banner of Centre Union.

During the rule of the Junta, Papaspyrou was arrested twice - in 1967 and in 1968 - and was exiled to Folegandros, Tilos and Marakomi camp. He was released in 1971.

After the restoration of democracy to Greece in 1974, he became a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and was once again elected, under its banner, to the Hellenic Parliament.

Papaspyrou won the 1982 municipal election of Piraeus and served as the city's mayor until 1986.

He died on July 5, 2010 at age 87.
