The city of Zakynthos is the largest town, main seaport and capital of the island and prefecture of Zakynthos.

Zakynthos is built along Bochali Hill in the SE of the island. Its population is about 12,000 inhabitants.

The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953. It was rebuilt with an attempt to retain the quaint, pre-earthquake character of the city.

Among its many worthwhile sites, are museums, churches, libraries, squares and the coastal road, Strata Marina, where most inhabitants and tourists take their stroll in the Summertime.
