Athanasius served as [[Bishop]] of [[Raidestos]] in [[Eastern Thrace]]. He was defrocked by [[Patriarch]] [[Dionysius IV of Constantinople|Dionysius IV]] for unbecoming behaviour towards his parishoners.

After Dionysius himself was removed from office, Athanasius became Patriach of Constantinople in his place for eight days: [[August 2]] - [[August 10]], [[1679]].
