Before succeeding [[Polyeuctus of Constantinople|Polyeuctus]] as Patriarch, in [[970]], Basil was a monk. He continued leading an ascetic life even after his election.

In [[974]], he was accused by clergymen of conspiring against the emperor. Basil refused to appear before the imperial court and demanded that a synod be called to hear the accusations against him. He was removed from office and exiled to a monastery near Scamandros.
