It arose as a right-wing alternative to Archbishop [[Makarios III]] in the [[1959]] presidential elections, during which it also attracted support from the leftist [[AKEL]]. <br /> <br /> In the presidential election of [[December 13]], [[1959]], Democratic Union fielded Ioannis Clerides as its candidate but he only polled one third of the vote.<br /> <br /> In [[1960]], the alliance with [[AKEL]] ended and the Democratic Union of Cyprus did not take part in the legislative elections of that year.
