Cavalry General Georgios Stanotas was born on Jan 1, 1888 in the village Kastanitsa of Arcadia in Peloponnese.  He left his village early and went to Athens looking for a better life.   In 1909 he joined the Army as a simple cavalry horseman.  &lt;br /&gt;
He was clever and bold and soon he was promoted to Non-commissioned Officer.  He was an excellent rider and he participated in the Balkan wars 1912-1913, where he went up the ranks quickly due to his brave actions. &lt;br /&gt;
In 1914 he graduated from the NCO Academy and was promoted to Second Lieutenant of Cavalry.  He participated in the campaigns of 1915-16 and in 1917 he was promoted to Captain.   &lt;br /&gt;
