John VII was one of the most learned men in the [[Byzantine empire]] in his day. He tutored emperor [[Theophilus]] and was appointed by the latter to the throne of [[St Andrew]] in [[836]]. He was an [[iconomach]] who, as Abbot of the Monastery of Sergius and Bacchus, had ordered all icons in the monastery destroyed. As patriarch, he continued those policies.

After the death of emperor Theophilus, John was removed by the empress [[Theodora (9th century)|Theodora]].

After John VII died, his remains were burnt by order of emperor [[Michael III]].
