Kosmopoulos was born in [[1928]]. He was first elected to the [[Thessaloniki]] City Council in [[1986]]. Three years later, he was elected Mayor of the city. During his administration he organised huge protests against the FYROM's government use of the name of [[Macedonia]].

Kosmopoulos also served as President of [[Iraklis FC|Iraklis]], a post once held by his father, Apostolos Kosmopoulos.

He died on [[February 12]], [[2011]], in [[Kaftantzoglio Stadium]], home of Iraklis.
