His surname in the world was Vaportzis. He studied at the [[Chalki Seminary]] and was ordained a deacon in [[1918]] and a priest in [[1928]].<br /> <br /> In [[1930]], he was elected Metropolitan of [[Philadelphia]] and, two years later, Metropolitan of [[Chalkidon]].<br /> <br /> In [[1946]] he was elected Ecumenical Patriarch however, due to stress-related health problems, he was forced to resign in October of [[1948]].
