These are some the names musically related with his career. Last year, he collaborated with Andriana Babali, in her debut album "...Kai i gi gyrizei" (And the earth goes round).</ins>

+

This step into the world of cinema, however, was not the only one. Four years later, he collaborates once again with the director, this time for the film "Brazilero." "I find a part of myself in a film, I identify myself with feelings familiar to me" he reveals and continues "I see Goritsas' heroes as parts of myself."</ins>

His penetrating, almost sharp lyrics fit with his tuneful, some times erotic music, proving that only a true creator can feel the fascination of music; just like he does.</ins>

To the influences of Manos Hadjidakis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix and Bob Dylan, other have been added, from the traditional Greek and oriental music. The combination of traditional and rock sounds was followed by the game with electronic sounds, dominating in Europe.</ins>

New page

Nikolaos Portokaloglou was born December 30, 1957 at Volos, Thessaly. His father, a refugee from Smyrni, worked for an oil company while his mother, a native with roots in two villages of the area, Almyros and Mitzela. Nikos Portokaloglou is the second child of the family, after one brother who is older by four years.

The Early Years
In 1958, the family moves to Crete for a year, then returns to Volos for a while, and finally settles in Athens in 1961, in the suburb of Nea Smyrni.

He goes to school at the 3rd, the 1st and the 6th school of Nea Smyrni. In the third grade he meets Odysseas Tsakalos, the person who will later become his main partner in the creation of the band FATME, as well as in his personal career, and who at the time was simply…the best football player of the school.

In 1969 he is Junior High school student at the Evangelical School of Nea Smyrni. His basic interests, besides schoolwork, are drawing and football. His first musical influences, via his parents, are the easy listening songs of the earlier years, the songs of Hadjidakis with Nana Mouschouri, international artists of the period such as Frank Sinatra and Yves Montant, and some other pieces of classical music. Through the music influences of his brother he meets the Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix and also the LP Perivoli Tou Trellou by Dionysis Savvopoulos.

In the second grade of junior high school, in 1970, he acquires his first guitar – a guitar which was a left-over of similar youthful activities of his father, forgotten by him in a trunk in the family house in Volos – and with the help of a method of practical learning, plus a sudden personal passionate drive, he starts to study for hours, playing songs from records by ear.

In 1972, he makes an effort to study at a music school – the National Conservatory of Nea Smyrni. Being a practical guitarist with an individual approach on the study of music, he becomes disappointed by the formal style of learning based on the classical standards. After attending guitar lessons for a while and some lessons in music theory over one year, he abandons his studies.

In A Band
In 1973, with some of his friends from school - amongst them Odysseas Tsakalos who had already started to play the drums – they create a band and start performing at friends’ homes or school dances, covers of songs by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix and old rock n’ roll songs.

At the same time, during their more private get-togethers, the members of the band play and study the earlier works of Manos Hadjidakis (Blood Wedding , A Tale With No Name etc.). With his friend Giorgos Filippakis – who later became known as a member of the band Hanome Giati Remvazo – they start writing their first songs together, which are “imitations of the foreign songs that we played” and whose lyrics are, of course, in English.

He finishes High School in 1975. After being prompted to do so by his parents – and due to his earlier aptitude for drawing – he takes the entry exams for the School of Architecture but fails. At the same time he begins to take lessons in Byzantine music at the National Conservatory of Nea Smyrni and begins to write his first songs with Greek lyrics and issues with which he is preoccupied at the time in his effort to create his career. One of the most interesting songs of this first period is – the later well known song – Asotos Ios (Prodigal Son) and the song Piso ap' tis Grilies (Behind the Shutters), which of course will enter into the discography with the first record of FATME, 4-5 years later. For an extended time period he attends the music school Ainian at Patisia, where his studies prove more vital than his earlier attempts, with regards to his approach to the guitar and vocals.
<!--

1978: With a group of friends and ex-schoolmates in Nea Smyrni – that is composed of Tsakalos and Mihalis Moustakis and the later Hanome Giati Remvazo Haris Kavalieratos, Argiris Amitsis and Giorgos Filippakis – they perform their own theatrical play at the cultural club of their area, which is mildly surrealistic and is entitled VISITING THE GRAVE OF COLOMBINA. The effort progresses between them to end up being a conflict between realism and surrealism on stage. From the name of a girl whom the characters of the play are waiting for, in order to unravel their engrossment concerning a very important issue, the group acquires its name from the spectators of the neighborhood. FATME. The group will perform 2-3 more theatrical plays written by its members – amongst these is one by Nikos Portokaloglou entitled THE ELVES AT MY OFFICE to which belongs the song YESTERDAY EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE which is included in the first record of FATME and also some children’s fairytales by his later wife, Marina Katsioti – but in the end it will turn to performing only music and concerts. During the same period, for clearly economic reasons, he will play the bass guitar at various popular music venues of the era, at first in Crete and later on in Athens. The venue TSIN TSIN at Zoodochou Pigis Street in the center of Athens with Beba Diamantopoulou, Giannis Dounias, George Gerolimatos, Magia Melagia and musical director Gerasimos Lavranos. This rather tough – as far as the hours are concerned – experience will be coupled with a broad knowledge of popular music as well as an ascertainment of the elements of charm and humanity of that particular music scene. After collaborating for a while with the band AGAPANTHOS, by playing the guitar at some of their concerts, he chooses teaching the guitar as a means to making an instant living. At the end of the year he leaves for Brussels in order to study there at a Fine Arts School, but after three months he decides that he is not interested in what he is studying and he returns to Greece.

1979 - 80: The nine-piece band FATME (Portokaloglou, Tsakalos, Moustakis – later to form FATME, Milionis: bass, Kavalieratos, Amitsis, Filippakis, Kerkiras – later to form Hanome Giati Remvazo and Ioanna Tsakalou: vocals) after continuing its concerts at various cultural clubs of the area for a while longer, where it performs many songs by its creative members, breaks up due to musical, lyrical and general ideological disagreements of its members.

Portokaloglou (guitar, vocals), Tsakalos (drums) and Moustakis (keyboards) together with Dimitris Kalatzis, also an old schoolmate (bass), form a new four-piece band with more of an electric sound than earlier, and drawing on ten songs by Portokaloglou, rehearse and prepare a demo, aiming to hit the record business. The relative answers of the record companies however are all negative.
1981 - 82: The person who finally acknowledges the sound of the new band and the songs by Portokaloglou, is the producer Tasos Falireas, who at the time has begun a small personal effort to release records. In May, the band starts to record its songs for the Falireas label. After a small interlude in recording due to the financial problems of the producer, the record is completed in autumn and the beginning of winter of that year under the EMI lable. The first live performances of the new lineup of FATME will take place at AH MARIA, the well known small venue in Exarheia, which at the time is where Vasilis Papakostantinou performs, but which on Mondays is host to youthful – and mostly English-speaking – bands of the era. From the performances at AH MARIA there will arise a collaboration with MOUSIKES TAXIARHIES – Jimmy Panousis/ also very new then band – and some common live performances will occur as a result. For a while the guitarist Thodoris Papadinas will collaborate with the band. In autumn they will perform for a while at Thanos Adrianos/ SOUSOURO in Plaka and soon after in December they will start their appearances at Iraklis Triantafillidis/ SOFITA. In the beginning of /82, the first record of FATME is released with the name of the band as the title and songs written solely by Nikos Portokaloglou (except one which is co-written with Dimitris Kalatzis). Although it meets with extremely positive reactions, being an electric record with greek lyrics and quite a few folk elements, it sounds strange to the – extremely watertight then – camps of the “rockers” on one side and the “folk listeners” on the other. The band continues to appear at the SOFITA in Plaka.

1982 - 83: During that period FATME are due to work with Vaggelis Germanos at LIDRA, but the “reconstruction plan” of Plaka by Antonis Tritsis, closes all the clubs. In the beginning of November they return to the studio to record their second album. Early in ’83, PSEMMATA, their second album is released, once more with songs written exclusively by Nikos Portokaloglou. As this album contains many love songs, this is one more reason that leads to a difficulty of “including” the band to the core of the “Greek rock” music of that period. The presentation of the record takes place at a popular folk venue at the time, KAN-KAN on Petrou Ralli street and quite a large number of people attend. The songs are presented live for the first time at AH MARIA and later at the KYTTARO, the famous “rock” venue of Ipirou Street. It is a difficult period for the band’s popularity both in selling records as in its live performances. It is however the time when Nikos Portokaloglou marries his long time friend Marina Katsioti.

1984 - 85: FATME begin their appearances at the RODEO on Heidn Street. In the Summer Dimitris Kalatzis leaves the band. As a three-piece band, for the time being, they start recording their third record – again solely with songs by Nikos Portokaloglou – in Thessaloniki, at the recording studio AGROTIKON which belongs to Nikos Papazoglou. The ‘mixed yet lawful’ sound that Papazoglou has suggested in his record HARATSI soon before, presents a good reason for cooperating, as it mirrors the respective dream of Nikos Portokaloglou. Many acoustic instruments are used during the recordings, more musicians participate (Hr. Killias, Th. Rellos, M. Siganidis, M. Nikolaidis and Hanome Giati Remvazo, the old members of the band), while the clarinet, played by Eleni Kalatzopoulou, holds a special presence on the record. The third record of the band is released with the eloquent, for its musical attempts, title RISKO (Risk). It is the record which brings FATME to a larger audience than that of the youthful bands of the “Greek Rock” music scene. With the song IPARHEI LOGOS SOVAROS and the risk of the music style of the record, we see the beginning of the references and the discussions about the generation of the metapoliteusi (the time period after the military junta in Greece). The RODEO, where they present their new songs for the first time, starts to fill out. In the summer they perform some first concerts in the rest of Greece with the participation of Panagiotis Kalatzopoulos on guitar and Mimis Dousoulis on bass. The latter will remain as the permanent bass player of the band until it breaks up.

1986 - 87: The fourth record of the band entitled VGENOUME AP’ TO TOUNEL is released. It is the “brightest” record of FATME lyrically up until then – the title, which translates “we are exiting the tunnel”, reflects the essence of the record – and the success it meets with is huge for such a youthful band. The song KALOKERAKI is sung everywhere, to be followed by PES TO KI EGINE, BLEXAN I GRAMMES MAS, BGENOUME AP’ TO TOUNEL and STI STADIOU – one of the two songs co-written with Odysseas Tsakalos. The collaboration of the established folk singer Haris Alexiou on two songs PES TO KI EGINE and BLEXAN I GRAMMES MAS, causes a particular reaction. In the summer the band’s extensive tour of Greece will be very successful. This will climax with their first big live concert at the Theatre of Lycabetus (16 September). During the winter period they will perform on stage at the venue GREEN PARK, which has been re-created by the painter Manolis Zaharoudakis and themselves. After the end of their appearances at GREEN PARK, the band tours Greece once more. At the same time Nikos Portokaloglou writes music for film for the first time in his career. The music for the film KAI DIO AVGA TOURKIAS by Aris Fotiadis, which will run at the Film Festival of Thessaloniki in 1987, is written by Nikos Portokaloglou.

1987 - 88: In autumn the band begins to record its new album. It is the time that Greece wins the “Eurobasket” cup and Nikos Portokaloglou sings the song PROTATHLITES (Champions). The song will become well known from its “maxi-single” version that is released at the end of the year, and is played repeatedly by the, very new then, private radio stations. In December his daughter Thaleia is born. Towards the end of the year, the band will appear at one of the programs overseen by Manos Hadjidakis at the MOUSIKO KENTRO ATHINON (at SIRIOS in Plaka) with D. Savvopoulos, N Xidakis, N. Papazoglou and DINAMEIS TOU EGEOU. Part of this “acoustic” appearance will be recorded on the album STO SIRIO IPARHOUNE PEDIA that will be released soon after. At the same time, the song KALOKERAKI will be recorded “symbolically”, for the needs of Dionysis Savvopoulos’ television show ZITO TO ELLINIKO TRAGOUDI plus the resulting album, with the cooperation of the representatives of the “new music scene” of that era (FATME, Katsimiha, Tsiamoulis, Giokarinis and, of course with them, Savvopoulos). The album TAXIDI will follow, which is the fifth and last album containing original songs for the band. Also the band will appear on a song by Takis Soukas, on the composer’s album TA LAIKA TIS ELENIS with Eleni Vitali. On the 20th of September the band will perform another successful live concert at the Lycabetus Theatre, which will be recorded live for the purpose of a new “live” album.

1988 - 89: The winter season will find the band on stage at ZOOM in Plaka, with Haroula Alexiou and Afroditi Manou. These appearances will also be recorded, and in early ’89 the double album entitled PALKO will be released, which will include the modern “cover” of 19 songs from FATME’s career and only one new song – the opening song of the show at ZOOM (I AGAPI ISOS XEREI). At the presentation of the new album to the press – spring ’89 – the break up of the band will be announced. Over the next period Nikos Portokaloglou will start to write new songs in an effort to start his own personal career.

1989 - 90: In October he starts recording his first personal album, with Giorgos Andreou as his basic partner, a solely acoustic arranging and the cooperation of many folk musicians (Vasilis Saleas: clarinet, Nikos Hatzopoulos: violin, Petros Tambouris: kanonaki, santouri). The album VOICES will be released in the beginning of ’90, marking a new beginning, which doesn’t seem to look very easy. Even though this album is a powerful musical proposition that will find many imitators during the upcoming decade, it doesn’t find the place it deserves. The effect of the album and the attendance at his live performances at the venue METRO and the following live concerts with Giorgos Andreou and Eleni Tsaligopoulou, is small. At the same time he appears on one song on the album KORITSI KAI GYNAIKA with songs by Giorgos Andreou, sung by Eleni Tsaligopoulou.

1990 - 91: December sees the release of the album KAIROS GIA DIO with music written by Nikos Portokaloglou and lyrics and vocals by Afroditi Manou. He slowly tries to form a new group of musicians for a more permanent cooperation. The collaboration with Odysseas Tsakalos is renewed and Giorgos Karagiannidis (bass), Kleon Antoniou (guitar), Thodoris Rellos (saxophone) and Takis Kanellos (percussion) are added to the group. In February he appears at the movie-theatre “Attikon” as part of the concerts given there by Haris Alexiou, and soon after he tours Greece with his five-piece band.

1991 - 92: The recording of the new album SIKO HOREPSE PSIHI MOU, SIKO HOREPSE begins in September and it’s a return to the sound of FATME with the cooperation of course of the new group. Also Dimitris Mitropanos participates on the album by singing the song KLEINO KI ERHOME, with Portokaloglou. Although this song becomes very well known, the record as a whole doesn’t do too well. With the release of the album, at the end of ’91, he decides for the first time in his career to move to another record label. From EMI – to which he belonged from the first steps of FATME – he moves to POLYGRAM (later UNIVERSAL). With his new band he appears at small venues of Athens and the rest of Greece. In April of ’92 he appears at the line of concerts MERES MOUSIKIS 1922-1992 which takes place at the venue PALLAS, at a concert of “modern music” together with N. Xidakis, M Tanagri and El. Tsaligopoulou. The live recording of the concert will be released on a double album.

1992 - 93: The group reforms once more and Xrisostomos Mouratoglou (pliktra) and Giannis Grigoriou (bass) are added to Odysseas Tsakalos and Kleonas Antoniou. The band starts recording its new work in this form.

1993 - 94: The album TA KARAVIA MOU KEO is released with the above band and the participation of Eleni Tsaligopoulou and the folk singer Savvas Siatras. The album is first presented at a live concert at the venue RODON with the participation of the two singers who appear on it, and Lavrentis Maheritsas. The band appears at KAFETHEATRO on Kodriktonos street and various other small venues all over Greece. In April ’94 Anastasia Moutsatsou’s album MISTIKA SIMADIA is released on which there are four new songs of his – the two with lyrics by his wife Marina Katsioti. During this time he appears on – former member of FATME – Mixalis Moustakis’ personal album entitled MITHI, by singing on one of the songs of the album. The collaboration with, an old acquaintance from the SOFITA days, Nikos Ziogalas begins in the form of live concerts, which will lead to an acoustic set of shows at the venue TSAI STI SAHARA. The two of them will continue working together by touring in the summer of ’94.

1994 - 1995: He collaborates with the director Pantelis Voulgaris by playing the part of a popular singer in the movie AKROPOL. He also writes a popular song that he sings in the film together with Melina Kana. It’s the song KLEISE TA MATIA SOU that becomes very popular.
1995 - 1996: He works on the idea of re-recording some of his older songs using other singers and a different musical arrangement. The production of the album is undertaken by Tasos Falireas – the producer of the first album of FATME – together with Giorgos Kyvelos, with the collaboration of the core band of that period (Tsakalos, Mouratoglou and Alekos Arapis on bass) and many more musicians. The album is released in March ’96, it is entitled ASOTOS IOS – the same title as his first very well known song – with appearances by the singers: Dionysis Savvopoulos, Eleni Vitali, Haris Katsimihas, Eleni Paspala, Eleni Tsaligopoulou, Manos Xidous, Nikos Ziogalas, Feevos Delivorias, Manolis Famelos and the debutante Roveena Alevra, while the team of FATME get together for the recording of just one song.
It’s an album that will become very successful, it will become “Gold” and it will create a new basis for his relationship with his audience. The first concerts after the release of the album will take place at the venue GRAMMES on Konstadinoupoleos street with a large attendance by the audience. A summer tour will follow plus on 16 September a big live concert at Lycabetus Theatre – the first of his solo career – with the appearance of many of the singers that appear on the album.

1996 - 1997: He writes the music and the songs for the film VALKANIZATER by Sotiris Goritsas, while also appearing in the film by playing the characteristic role of a “rock” musician of the Balkans. The album with the music and the songs of the film will be released in the summer of ’97 and is entitled KRIFTO. It is a new effort of blending acoustic and electric instruments and is recorded with the collaboration of his core group plus many established musicians of the new generation (Ahalinotopoulos, Vavatsikas, Evanthia Reboutsika etc.). The songs are sung, apart from by himself, by Poli Panou, Giannis Kotsiras and Roveena Alevra. The first live presentation of the album is performed at RODON with all of the artists who have appeared on it and is very successful. In the summer he performs in various towns of Greece.

1997 - 1998: He appears as a supporting artist at the concert by U2 that takes place in Thessaloniki that is the “Cultural Capital of Europe”. He appears at the venue MILOS in Thessaloniki and at DIPLA STO POTAMI in Athens and various similar venues of other Greek towns. In the summer he tours various parts of Greece. He collaborates with Manolis Famellos by singing one song on the latter’s album MAVRI AGAPI.

1998 - 1999: He appears on the album TRAGOUDIA GIA TOUS FILOUS MOU – TRIBUTE to Dionysis Savvopoulos, performing with his own band and singing TO PERIVOLI by Dionysis Savvopoulos. His son Lefteris is born in December.

1999 - 2000: The album PEHNIDIA ME TO DIAVOLO is released, an effort that is based on an electric band that is comprised of Portokaloglou, Tsakalos, Mouratoglou and Arapis, his core collaborators the past few years. He appears at the venue METRO with the same band for three months and then goes on a summer tour. He appears on the album PERASMENOS EONAS by Stavros Logaridis by singing with him one of his songs.

2000 - 2001: He appears at the venue METRO in an acoustic set, together with Kostas Livadas, Adriana Babali and Odysseas Galanakis. He goes on tour in Greece that summer with the same artists. He writes the music and the songs for the movie BRAZILERO by Sotiris Goritsas, and tries to blend electronic music with natural instruments. Together with his usual collaborators Tsakalos and Mouratoglou – the latter sharing the arrangement with him – he uses instruments such as the Cretan lyra, the nei, the flute, the kanonaki and others. He shares the vocals of the songs of the film with Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Stavros Logaridis and Adrianna Babali.
2001 - 2002 : During the winter season he appears together with Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Giorgos Andreou at the venue METRO. As soon as the album with the music from the film BRAZILERO is released towards the end of 2001, the song THALASSA MOU SKOTINI becomes a huge hit. The song is continuously played on the radio waves and the album goes platinum. The authentication of the success of BRAZILERO comes with the first ARION music awards (the official awards handed by IFPI), at which N. Portokaloglou wins three awards: Best Artistic Album, Best Album for Film and Song of the Year for THALASSA MOU SKOTINI. Before the summer he releases a CD single with two remixes of THALASSA MOU SKOTINI plus the song TI LIPI with El. Arvanitaki. All three remixes are overseen by Xrisostomos Mouratoglou and Goetz B. Together with Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Giorgos Andreou they go on an extended summer tour. He appears on a song on Stavros Logaridis’ record MIA VOUTIA STIN AGAPI, while two of his songs appear on Eleni Tsaligopoulou’s new CD single PENTE TRAGOUDIA GIA ENA KALOKERI. Twenty years after the first FATME album, a selection of songs is released on a double CD entitled IPARHEI LOGOS SOVAROS (N. Portokaloglou – FATME and Friends, 1982-1992. The CD includes songs from the first six albums of the band, N. Portokaloglou’s first two solo albums, appearances on albums by other artists (Savvopoulos, Vitali, Tsaligopoulou, Manou, Moutsatsou) plus two previously unreleased songs from recordings of that era: the cover of EIDA TA MATIA SOU KLAMENA by Akis Panou and the song DE SOU FTEI KANENAS.
2003 - 2004: During the winter of 2003 he performs a number of shows at MEDOUSA (Athens) and MYLOS (Thessaloniki) with his musical companions Odysseas Tsakalos, Adrianna Babali and Manos Pirovolakis, while autumn 2003 sees the large live concert at the Lycabetus Theatre, celebrating his 20 years in the music industry. Some of his dearest friends appear at this sold out concert, including artists Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Haris Alexiou, Manolis Famellos, Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Dimitris Mitropanos.
