Born in [[1917]], Phaedon Gizikis was a career [[Greece|Greek]] army officer. In [[1967]] he supported the [[Georgios Papadopoulos]]' [[coup d'etat]] and received a number of senior military posts during [[Greek military junta of 1967-1974|the dictatorship that followed]] . He was given the figurehead title of President of the Republic in [[November]] [[1973]], after Papadoupoulos was ousted by [[Dimitrios Ioannides]] as head of the regime in an internal power struggle.

After the fall of the dictatorship in [[1974]], he retained his post for four months until a new constitution could be enacted; he was then replaced by [[Michail Stasinopoulos]].

After his fall from power he went into seclusion; he died impoverished and blind in [[1999]].
